Ethan's photo bomb'n [a photographic lineage]

Postby elcaldwell » Wed May 26, 2010 2:14 am

Greetings from the Chi folks!

I figured I'd toss some shots into an ongoing thread to sample my progress and what I'm keeping up with out here in the Chi. I also wanted to use this as a way to track my progress and obtain feedback and critique. To start things off, here's a bit of what I began with when I first got into digital photography. At the time, I only wanted to shoot cars and I HATED shooting people:

It was the last picture that sparked my interest in light. That and considering I took it with a p&s while the other two were with my xti, I was really wondering what the heck I was doing wrong! After getting some critique and being told by my mentor that learning about light was the way to go, I started experimenting, changing up how I was shooting, processing, and looking at the overall workflow as a whole instead of just shooting from the hip. It took me countless overprocessed shots and HDR experiments before I finally ventured into the world of off camera flash:

I had to take a break from cars once I moved to the Chi, and tried to focus my attention on people, which I dreaded with a passion. I saw it as a challenge - to shoot something I hated with a passion and make it work in a creative, meaningful manner. Add some light and that hatred started to turn into an appreciation:

The appreciation turned into a shift towards couples, and with the help of awesome opportunities, I was able to shoot for some couples here and there:

Looking back brings me closer to where I currently am - still experimenting, still finding ways to utilize and appreciate natural and artificial light, and still striving to improve. Here's a sample of some my more recent work:

Sorry for the photo dump! I'll try to keep it briefer in the future :P

wakaranai - No sir. I never attended photo school, unless you count Ken's critique corner / tutelage :P

This reminds me...I need to shoot something before I get to my next essay.

Round 2! Since finals are over and the summer's in full swing, I've had some more time to get out and about. Here's a sample of what's happening out here in the Chi. It's a mix of the natural and artificially lit, single shot and composite, traditional and conceptual, and all that good jive. Though the majority of these are people shots,I'm hoping that I can shoot some cars and what not once I'm back in the bay. Enjoy!

Round 3!

Thanks for the comments folks! Driving the Miata from Cali to the Chi allowed for some nice photo opportunities and opens up a larger realm of what I can do out here. I was able to cure my car fix photo wise, but it also made me realize how much I've missed it. I need to do some exploring out here to get a better feel for where to shoot and where to progress from here. In the meantime, here's a few select shots to enjoy from the trip to Cali, the road trip, and a car show out here in Illinois:
