Why not get a LSD from a NB instead?

-Any 7" differential from a 94+ Miata
-Ring and pinion from that differential
-Rx7 Clutch-type LSD from an 86-88 GXL or 88 GTU (check for LSD before buying)
-Miata stubshafts with Rx7 circlips

As a bonus, if you need to (for instance, if you broke the housing on your Miata diff when your diff blew), you can use the aluminum housing/mounts from the Rx7 diff with the Miata third member. You just need to replace the Rx7 bushings with Miata-specific bushings. The bolt pattern is the same.

The LSD from the FB will fit into the Miata diff, but it requires some custom seals or something and is much less plug and play. Basically, you want an early FC diff.

Sav, what would you say is the estimated cost to go to the RX-7 LSD assuming you already have the 1.8 rear end in the car and just need the LSD and circlips from the RX-7?

Depends greatly on what you end up paying for the diff. I paid $140 for my Rx7 diff and $275 for a shop to set it up.

I got mine from PNP for $50. Actually, I found two or three. You may get lucky as well, shop around.

Just to throw this in there, I think only 84-85 GSL-SE diffs are 7", andrew may have to comment here, but the carburated car diffs i believe are different...

the carb'd 12a models are also 7" rig gears. the difference between the gsl and the gsl-se is that ratio. gslse are 4.1 while the gsl are 3.9

Yes and no, the problem is that I think the early 12a cars had smaller axles... so I don't really know if they are compatible...
