alignment off again

Postby ttcheung97 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 8:55 am

I replaced the shocks on my miata last holiday season (reused my FM springs), and then took the car to Motorsport Techniques to get an alignment. They've always been good with alignments, but a while later my driver's side rear lost alignment for some reason. The tech at the shop tried aligning again, and noticed that, even with the ecentric bolts at full lock, the minimum negative camber I could get was 1.9degrees. Fine. Fast forward a month later, I adjusted the parking brake yesterday and then lowered the car back down. I could've swore i heard a "thump" and noticed the alignment was off again! This time it was like positive!

My shock and shock mount bolts are torqued, the eccentric bolts don't seem to have rotated, i don't seem to have any bent arms, my bushing are dry but not trashed, there's not clunking/rattling when i'm driving. I don't see any adjustments on the upper arms, only the bottom. And input? Thanks in advance.

Usually a "thump" when lowering a car is the spring seating in the perch. Did you move the car around after lowering it down? Could just be bound up from being in the air.

Dont seem and did rotate are different. Get a set of wrenches and see if the eccentrics are loose. They have to be absurdly tight usually double wrench or long wrench tight. I blow out a lot of my long ratcheting wrenches at work doing this :( you will need new eccentrics if they dont tighten down properly.

If you do end up needing eccentrics, I've got a brand new set collecting dust.
Picked them up when they were rumored to become scarce.

Been sitting on them since.

Is it strange i stock a pair of eccentric bolts at work at all times?

thanks for the feedback. at the shop, the alignment was off.5degrees, BOTH driver's side front AND rear. WTH...

I can't confirm if the eccentrics rotated or not, but this time around Jack (the tech) tightened those suckers down HARD. We also saw some play on the wheel bearing, and that the top arm bushing was SLIIIIGHTLY worn; not deteriorated or falling off though, and definitely didn't seem enough to trash an alignment. The springs are compressed when the car is in the air

i hate these old car problems, i was hoping the miata wouldn't have these problems. The front end is on jack stands while I put on a new (used) bumper, so when it's back on the ground I'll have to check things again. but seriously, besides eccentric bolts, what else would cause this change?

Thanks.

ride height from the different parts you installed. Dont over think it. Also it takes some time or some driving to settle at its desired ride height.

I've also noticed that I have some cupping starting to form on the corner in question. Doesn't cupping (on the edges) result from worn suspension components (in addition to alignment) as well?

cupping is usually from bad shocks/struts but could be the bushings also.

are the shocks new? what tire are you running?

My shocks are new. I'm guessing some of the cupping was attributed to the new tires on when still running old, blownout shocks. I didn't think ~1000 miles would do that though.

running Kumho Ecsta XS.

Took it to the shop yesterday to check on the bearings and such, VERY little play, if anything, it was the tire flexing around. The wheels were perfectly balanced, and the hubs spun freely w/out any whirring.

Perhaps I'm just getting paranoid as these miles climb higher and higher.
