I made the passenger side, and boy did it take a lot less time and is a lot stronger than the first side. I think sometime this week ill redo the drivers side. I think the angle is much to aggressive and not nearly as stable as it needs to be.

Heh, never said i wasn't for hire, its just all labor intensive stuff that sucks about building something from nothing.

What are your thoughts on its support, or lack there of. I am wondering what 100mph winds are going to do with rivets/bolts/washers..

The design looks REALLY good dude - that is going to generate some SICK front end downforce - you may end up needing more rear wing now, haha.

I seriously am going to tap you or Sav this winter for wrenching on my car.

There are enough fasteners to keep it secure. Is your splitter attached to your lip spoiler? If not, theres is going to be a bit of flex on the bumper where the canards are mounted - I don't think the stock bumper support rods are beefy enough. I would probably use a strip of 1/8 x 3/4 aluminum strip as a backing plate on the inside and then fasten the lowest bolt/nut to a new support rod to attach to the chassis, or maybe replace the lowest stock rod with a beefier version and extend it to attach as low as possible(can't remember where the lower rod attaches).

good stuff dude...

nice. all stickered up and ready to play. i wanted to come up today and watch but the small-scale has a piano recital so...
hope you get a chance to run. did you bring wets?

one curiosity looks like you had to rework the fmic/splitter support. splitter support still strong? if it deflects down a bit thas fine, but you don't want it to deflect up....

good luck looks like fun.

are you leaving the stock studs or do you replace? i'm not sure what my issue is but i've got loose wheels after every morning session and i'm checking/re-torquing after 30 min (after they have cooled off).

dig the canards. have you considered modeling on computer? i saw a thread on m.n where bob said he had a reasonable model and i know this guy you see....

Tonto, are your wheels and/or lug nuts new? If so, scuff them up with sandpaper and it should minimize the issue. How much are you torquing them cold?

I rarely had issues with loosening lug nuts(yes, on stock studs) after only one session - the only times this happened was with new wheels and/or new nuts. Aluminum nuts seem to loosen a bit more than steel fwiw.

Nick, you probably won't be able to figure out how much front downforce you have until you get a chance to drive on a dry day, but here is what I would do to test it out:
  • Swap out the nuts on the inside of the bumper where the canards attach - use some wing nuts - bottom attachment @ the splitter I guess needs to stay as a nut/bolt.
  • Do several hot laps, then pull into the hot pits
  • Have a buddy in the hot pits take FRONT tire temp measurements and then quickly remove the canards
  • Drive 2-3 more laps and then pull into hot pits again for tire temp checks, or in pits if you don't have to drive too far(hot pits will be more accurate).

I have seen other F/I miatas with big canards/splitters such as William Chen's Rotrex car so I don't think you went too big. If anything you may have to adjust your rear wing for more rear end downforce, but again you won't really know until you get a dry test day where you can really push it.

You are likely going to find you need more negative camber, but tire temps will be key for that.

Regardless, I think you did a great job on the canards and am really impressed with how your car is coming along - two thumbs up dude!

answering for tonto. if tonto hasn't changed wheels or lug nuts from the last time i saw the car, they are old wheels and lug nuts. lug nuts were some gorilla brand spline drive thing. weight feels like steel.

i see u got your f1 style wind tunnel on that first pic. awesome pic. looks like T10? and boy howdy can u find religion there in the rain - fast turn deep water no runoff big wall.

minimi/papa: muchas graz for teh advice. what papa said. nuts are steel with some chrome plating which is still quite smooth. torquing to 80ftlb and after session (and cooling) i'm 45* to 90* turn loose.. i'll check the wheels make sure clean and scuff the nuts.
