Nick's 1963-1972-2013 M.G. Special

Postby nick » Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:01 pm

This is my current roadster project. Been working on it for about a year now, got another year or so to go.

It's a 1963 Lotus 7 replica, a.k.a. Locost, based on a 1972 MGB. I would've posted a build log here earlier, but I wasn't sure I was ever going to finish it. Still not sure, but I like my chances. I'll post updates every couple of weeks until either it's done, or I run out of money, whichever comes first.

If you're not familiar with Locosts, most of them (well, not most, but maybe half) are built from Miatas. I like my Miatas the way they came from Mazda, so I based my Locost on an old rusted-out British car. I'm hoping it'll be almost as fun as a Miata, and if nothing else it'll be faster than my '97.

DIY space frame and suspension components. Very nice.

Interesting choice on the "GAZ" brand earth-friendly shocks.

Wow it's been awhile since I updated this. Since getting the car on it's wheel last fall, we stripped the frame down and welded on a bunch of sheet metal, the floor, firewalls, and transmission tunnel. We painted everything and put everything back together last month, and fired it up for the first time last week.

We can't drive it yet, mostly because it doesn't have a driveshaft. The driveshaft from the donor needs to be shortened and balanced, and that's not something we want to tackle ourselves. We also still need seats, a windshield, and some bodywork, plus all the lights. I'm hoping to get everything done this year, get it registered for the street, and bring it out to a Wednesday GTG.

Over the summer we installed the gas tank, interior, bodywork, and lights. There's a lot of details to finishing up a car even after you get it running. The engine didn't quite fit under the hood so we made some modifications. Still left to do is the windshield, front fenders, seats, side mirrors, license plate lights, coilovers, driveshaft, and a couple of little things like a badge for the grill.

A few more months and the car will be registered for the street. It takes awhile to go through all the inspections and paperwork, but it should go smoothly. The CHP has to inspect the car for stolen parts, and a smog ref has to sign off on the car as a replica of a 1963 Lotus 7. The car then has to pass the same brake and light tests you go through for a salvage title. After that, the DMV sends you plates and it's just another street-legal car.

Hey, I appreciate all the comments. I'm hoping it inspires someone out there to make one of these out of a trashed Miata. It's really not that hard, just takes awhile, and it's 1000 lbs. lighter than a Miata when you're done.
