T's white 94 dd/track build

Postby Twibs415 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:13 pm

I should have started this a long long time ago. Anyways January 2009 i bought my car, a 94 B package i got it and fell in love right away.

it already had a few mods but nothing to extreme
it had exhintake cam installed wrong, muffler shop special exhaust. 95 sun visors, agx shocks, ebay STB and the wheels were painted white and a black glass window soft top.

this was around the time when i just got it.

Then the madness started. The goal for my car was to be a dd/ track car. this meant the car had to have a few amenities and still be smog legal.

i started to remove stuff i didnt like or want slowly but always tried to do it do it was reversible but that changed quickly.

first to go were the sun visors, cruise control door buzzer and clutch safety switch.

then there was stuff i needed. iv always been a diy person so i made a radiator shroud first.

Image

this was the first verson that i eventually messed up cause i dropped a wrench on it and the aluminum was to thin.

upon looking at all the papers my car came with i got a bunch of maintenance done by a guy who was the second previous owners before i got it he ordered lots from finish line. There was one registration paper left from three owners ago, and it turns out that the guy who once owned my car lives one block away more on him later.

enough history

my car came with one key and it was ugly and from a typical key shop so i ordered this bad boy which took way to long to come in.

Image

i then attached my full time co pilot

im trying to go in order here

march 09 i went to miatapalooza and saw all the cool cars and the targa miata and what not great experience!

later that month i started collecting parts for a brake system overhaul.

Image

i hit the rotor hats with bbq black paint cause rust is ugly.

then i went on my first road trip with my best friend. we went to Santa Barbara and partied with my friend at the time who is now my girlfriend and i stopped at moss and picked up these guys

Image

so i went to my friends shop RIGHT after i got home from SB and started to install the brakes.

i panted the calipers and brackets and installed the parts. when i got to the rear i pulled this out of the passenger side

Image

thank god i replaced my brakes even though i didnt really NEED to.

This car turned out to be a giant learning tool for me and i still learn from it when i work on it.

so i wanted more power and gathered up some parts to do an exhintake mod which i didnt know my car already had. i had the gear drilled by my old coworker who was taking a class at sf states machine shop

Image

i installed the cam and gear and my car drove like crap. so i got to my friends shop and i pulled the valve cover off to make sure my timing was still right. And it was. i was baffled. then i put it all back together and checked the timing it was WAYYYYYYYYYY off. so the PO who installed the first exhintake was off a tooth and compinsated by changing the ignition timing. lazy ass....

i also painted my VC gm gold, wired the fans in parallel, and painted my header heat shield bbq black.

i needed some safety from the convertible top incase of a roll over so i got a hard dog double diagonal hardcore hardtop because i wanted a roll bar that fit a hard top and my soft top at the time.

Did you mask off the rotors and just hit it with paint?

andrew i did this

on my second set of front rotors it turns out you can do it like that but not nearly as exact but you have to be very careful the first few blocks you drive so the paint can wear off.

more free cheap mods i polished all my lenses hit it with 400 then 800 then 1000 wet and 2000 wet and then polished with heavy then medium then fine by hand and finished with wax.

Image

around early december irene informed me that justin had a racing beat exhaust with no resonator for sale so i told my sister and her BF to buy it for me. it was exactly what i wanted no resonator so it would be louder but still quieter than my crappy muffler shop special that would hit my stub shafts on hard turns.

Image

this exhaust hit my sub frame so i got poly hangers. the one closest to the cat got a little melted so i put the oem one back on no more problems since

got bored so i removed my exhaust manifold and ground out the welds on the inside and had the down pipe welded and coated them with vht and then wrapped them with header wrap. the stock cat also got vht.

February 2010 i get a fm sway bar and install zerk fittings on the bushings. later per lannys suggestion i fluted the insides to help distribute more grease inside the bushing.

Image

BAD NEWS a few days later. my car got hit or i hit a car it depends on who you ask.

Image

my grandpa and i fixed it with some bondo over the next few weeks and i took the insureance money and bought a hardtop and materials to make the fit. it didnt turn out that well as diy clear coat doesnt work to well. i sported the car like this for quite some time. more on this later.

speaking of more on this later

The guy who used to own my car. chip or Anthony depends on how well you know him. i met him at some point in front of his house and had a quick chat with him he said he used to part out and fix miatas and sell them he has over 30 during this time and mine was one of them he currently has a 95 painted Merlot mica with dual exhaust and a roll bar and his wife has/had a super charged nb. Very rad guy i told him the story and he couldnt believe it.

a few months goes by and i don't do much with my car as its summer time and i begin to save money.

October 2010

at this point i have removed my entire AC system. removed the soft top and bolted the hard top on. made a version 3 air diversion plate and got a beatrush rear stb from pnp for $12 and i made it fit the front. and picked up some clean black cloth seats for $40 from someone building a spec miata.

Image

later on that year i started to make parts and sell them to other miata owners. i made plug and play air bag light defeats. i sold a bunch almost more than i could make.

Image

this leads us into 2011

January 2011

after waiting a few months i finally got my 6uls 15x7 with bfgoodridge gforce sports.

Image

hard to get this all in order but some time before the wheels i got a set of tein springs (thanks frankie) fcm bump stops, and 949 end links.

now my car sat like this.

iv neglected to speak more about my interior.

i got an alpine unit for free from my sister cause she couldnt wait for the insurance company to send her a new one after hers got stolen. which left me with a big ugly hole to fill up under it.

so i did this

Image

it started off as just the volts gauge and a switch, then i got rid of the switch and added a vac gauge (for later purposes)

i also picked up a delrin shift knob off some guy on m.net. i chose this light weight delrin knob because i like the feel of a light knob and the delrin doesn't get to hot.

also i junked the diper steering wheel in favor of a rx7 wheel which i drove around with for a while but i got sick of it because it was larger maybe 370mm or so.

then i picked this up :) and havent thought about anything else since. it will be for sale soon though as i got another one thats even cleaner.

on the ever elusive quest to modify till perfection

i drilled my wp pulley (v2 coming sooner or later)
Image

i also got a fm high flow cat. made my car a little louder which is exactly what i wanted.

then i made my own coolant reroute
Image

and started to make bling bolts which sold pretty good here but even better in the uk

before i get to my car in its present state. we can talk about my engine build.

originally it started off as just a 99 head swap.

i picked up a 99 head from Ken that he had sitting out for some time. it was fucked to say the least. anything that could have rusted did.

i pulled the head apart and started cleaning it.

the cam lobes were rusted there was a ton of carbon build up on the valves, the lifters were shot and i didnt have an intake manifold.

Image

i then got the dremel out and went to work!

here is the bowls and chamber
Image

the exhaust runners
Image
and the intake runners
Image

i ended up getting a 99 intake manifold that i spent a long time cleaning up until i came across this for a great price
Image

i got valves that were in better shape. and lifters and an extra exhaust cam from Abe.

still to do:
3 angle valve job
head skim
hot tanking then the head will be done.

i still need a megasquirt and 01+ pistons and then i get to build it all up. maybe by the end of this year?

ok back at it again!

Big things happening!

my car got rear ended late last year the damage wasnt too bad the trunk was a little bend out of shape the tail light and the rear finish were broken. not too bad i could have taken the money and fixed it myself but i went to a shop that i know and opted to get all the dings and my old work fixed and have the whole care re-painted.

Image

i had uh ohs when my car wasnt done when i needed it for my first track day gds5 so i took it out of the shop for the weekend.

Image

having fun down the back straight
Image

so i returned my car to the shop where it sat for a few weeks then finally it got some paint.

Image

more pictures soon!

a few of you have seen my car since i got it back.

iv also been working on it non stop since i got it back.

today, i welded the seams behind the fenders, a few more inside the car and sprayed the backside of the fenders with under coating as i have micro fender liners and want to reduce some sounds hopefully.

lightweight flywheel going in next friday.

oh! i also cut the rear bumper. ill take some pictures of everything tomorrow.

im not much of a welder but i did my best and to be honest the car does feel different. i forgot the bottom front seam but i can always do it as the fender doesn't need to come off. i put new seam sealer on the seams and hit it with grey rustolium. good enough for me.

much more work to do but iv been feeling out of it recently so progress is slow.
