I've used OEM spoilers for years on most of my Miatae and yes, the plastic they are made from is the best type: ABS. It is virtually unbreakable and like I said, I have seen torn up front SM bumpers and the spoilers are rarely even out of shape.

The OEM spoilers also have lines in them near the edges. I am honestly impressed with how close to stock this spoiler is- even the bolt holes line up with what is on the stock spoilers(yes, I compared it to my stocker today).

Now, compared to my GV spoilers this piece is FAR more flexible. I don't think we have anything to worry about and I am keeping mine.

OK, you've talked me out of sending it back. Your wise words ring true sensei.

Don't know why I was getting so cranky. Maybe it's just because I always drive FLATOUT and my car parts must be able to take it. :)

Well I'm not saying it will hold up to slamming into a parking lot burm or a steep driveway snag in reverse(both have ixploded GV spoilers), but these seem to be more flexible than the GV spoilers that I blew up.

A bit of advice for those that have never installed an OEM or replica front spoiler before:
If your bumper never had one installed(virgin bumper) then you will be drilling new holes. I strongly recommend you use a couple small ratchet style clamps to hold the lip firmly against the bumper so that you can keep it maneuverable, but still allow you to use both hands. I also recommend you either remove the front wheels(put it on jacks) so that you can mount the ENDS to the bumper edges FIRST. You will need to use a screw for those corners(as is used on the OEM spoilers).

Once you have the edges in the right spot, install the screws to hold them in place. Then proceed with drilling the holes for the mounting bolts/nuts. I suggest starting in the middle and working your way towards each side. After you drill a hole, hand tighten the fasteners so the spoiler is snug and will not move. That way, nothing shifts around and it will look proper once it is done.

The spoiler and bumper are both flexible so you can bend the spoiler lip forward when drilling the holes.

Anybody have one of the TrackDogRacing splitters on their spoilers?

I am thinking of picking one up:Image

I'm interested to hear too. I was thinking of putting on my new wonderful and excellent lip, doing a track event. Then putting on the Track Dog splitter and another event as a compare/contrast.

a. Seems like it should help on the downforce
b. It looks bitchin'

And thanks very much for the good advice on installing the lip for the lip newb (like me).

I did a 180 based on minime's post on his experience and I'm going to keep it. I probably got cranky because I need a nap. Or a drink. Or both.

Not sure it would help much with downforce, but it surely would not hurt. I can tell you that the GV spoiler noticeably increases downforce at speed - it is noticeable even at 35-40mph.

I like the fact that it would help protect the spoiler, ah who am I kidding - it looks badass.

Yup, it protrudes pretty far forward, especially in front of the mouth - chubby lip:

I think the biggest flaw with the GV spoiler is not the plastic quality, but that the underside is not level. It is angled downward so it easily catches on anything when you are backing up in the car. My latest GV spoiler has lasted several years on my LE, but I have been careful. I have to be VERY careful where I park and if I am backing out of a driveway, especially angled driveways. I have scraped the hell out of it going forward and even bounced it off a few parking lot burms, it seems to handle scraping no problem.

I blew up my first one backing out of an angled driveway - the corner caught on the pavement and it blew up into about 20 shards. My second one blew up when I drove over a cement burm thing(the parking lot stops) and it snagged, blowing out the entire center section. The third one I bought used from Leni Metro who's wife had cracked it right in the middle, but not sure how it happened. That one survived many track events and I later sold it to someone for $25.

Let me put it this way, I don't think the GV piece would hold up like the Tougerun replica(upgrade):

Hi I just bought one of these R-lips from ebay, it arrived today and i guess i didn't research as much on how to install em. I really thought it was a plug and play kind of thing and i didnt check first if my bumper had existing holes so my bumper is a virgin. Im really a noob in DIY stuff. you think u can take pics of how to install or a video? Would really appreciate it.

line up the lip and hold it on with double stick tape, then start drilling. virgin bumpers are the best

I use small clamps(shitty one's from HF work) to hold it in place, just clamped with enough force to keep them from moving, then after I am done eyeballing the fit I clamp them down tight. Stand up and take a look from different angles to make sure it looks like things line up and then go to town with your drill.

Drill from the center out to the edges, loosely tighten your fasteners after each hole is drilled. At the ends you should use a screw to attach the spoiler to the bumper, but it really isn't required, although you cannot get a tight flush fit @ the edges unless you add a fastener there, just fyi. You can pivot the tires out of the way using the steering wheel in each direction, or if you have small hands and an uber stubby screwdriver you can do it the hard way.

Found this on Ebay too, also comes with hardware. Anyone wants to give it a try? At $80, maybe it's worth a try. Supposedly it's made of the same material as the OEM lip? Can anyone confirm, it's not PU, it's PP material

Holy shit! These are knockoffs of knockoffs of the knockoffs of the OEM lips! Great price, assuming if doesn't fall apart on the first thing it scrapes against - I would try it if I needed one.

I ordered one last week and it arrived Friday, I thought it would work on my Sunburst. It looks very much the same material as the $110 lip that a few of us picked up earlier. In fact, it may be the same, although I haven't compared them side-by-side. The only difference that I could see, was what molded in very small letters, below the left brake duct was one word: "Rota" I did not notice this on the $110 lip.

Any pics of the install? How's the fitment? So far it sounds like it's worth the $80 huh?

Good heavens - now there's a version made of polypropylene! Does that have any chance of reviving the real world?

I ordered the $80 lip from another Ebay seller. http://www.ebay.com/itm/190654409925?ss ... 106wt_1396. I received it within 2 days. First lip had a small crack. I called their 800 number on their website. They shipped another one out the next day with no questions asked. Awesome customer service! They told me UPS would be calling me to pick up the other lip but it's been a week and no phone call. Looks like I will have a back up one! As far as fitment, it fits great! I have bought at least 5 lips from R-Speed and it's the same material but with better hardware. It came with stainless nuts and bolts.

Wow, that is a score.

Update on the cheap ebay replica that I bought back in December - fitment was good, but not great. The Miata I put it on has never had a front lip nor has it ever had damage to the bumper skin so it is straight as an arrow. Compared to OEM fitment was near the same except near the outer areas nearest the brake cooling ducts the lip did not want to line up perfectly with the underside of the bumper skin - it sticks out about 2mm, which is not that far off, but it definitely does NOT fit as well as OEM. You cannot notice it unless you get down close to it, so no biggie. I scraped it pretty well on my driveway and it seems to have taken the pain without bitching. I am a bit hesitant to try to try it in reverse though as it is definitely not as robust as ABS.
