Innovation in racecar engineering

Postby billybobster » Wed Aug 03, 2016 6:42 pm

Next time your car is overheating, why not install a Honda Del Sol radiator on your front bumper for bonus convection?

A bit of field engineering done Sat PM. It was very very very very hot at Thunderhill last weekend.

It did, for a while. Friday and Saturday we had wicked quick overheating (over 110 degrees ambient). 3-4 laps and come in, work on it for two hours. Sat evening we got the bonus radiator and installed. Sunday we could do normal stint lengths, but slowly, driving to the water temp gauge. Then with 45 min left on Sunday, head gasket blew.

Is the turbo oil cooled or water cooled? And are you guys running an oil cooler?

Turbo is water cooled. And we don't have a separate oil cooler. Or a turbo heat shield. Or many other things. Although we had cut more opening in the front and done some radiator ducting previously.

Between now and the next race (Oct. 1 at Buttholewillow), I believe we will cooler/vent/duct/shield all the things. And figure out a coolant partial redirect rearwards on a 2.3L Ford Lima.
