Is it illegal to park on the sidewalk?

Postby nitewing117 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:35 am

I'm not talking about the 3'-4' wide sidewalks in front of houses, etc., but those large patches of concrete in front of the larger stores. I've always been tempted to park up on them instead of between cars..

Not to be a total nerd, but it just depends how wide the sidewalks are legislated to be. I'm not really sure what you mean by larger stores...like a Best Buy? Anyway, a sidewalk is meant for public use, so parking a car on a sidewalk is not all right! For example, in SF, the City has been pretty aggressive with people who park in their driveway or even parking along their set back house because it's still part of the public right of way.

yup, pretty sure it's illegal: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/hdbk/parking.htm

You can also check vehicle code 22500 if you want the specifics: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22500.htm

Personally I try to park as far away from everyone as I possibly can though. Too many door dings from inconsiderate people.

I'd park far away too if I was driving my cage, but i'm referring to a motorcycle (hence this being under Two Wheel Motion). I'd never try and park my car up on the sidewalks...

Door dings arent my concern since its more likely to get tipped over, but I feel like my bike would have more of a chance to get picked up and thrown in a van if I parked out away from everything.

By large plots of concrete, I mean areas like the one in front of the movie theaters at Union Landing, Great Mall, Rubio's Pacific Commons, etc.

only time you can park on the sidewalk is when it's a street cleaning day.

It's a grey area. No it is not alright to park on the sidewalks. But if the sidewalk is large enough and your bike is out of pedestrians way, you might be able to get away with it. I would only attempt this in the burbs. Do not try this in SF, SJ, Oakland, Berkeley.

Do you know someone who wants to buy or sell a house? I'll buy a $500 car part, when we close escrow as a "thank you" to you for the introduction.

Ditto - got a parking ticket for that in the SOMA area in SF. :burned:
