Few miatas in SF got hit last night (1/21)

Postby Snake520 » Fri Jan 22, 2016 3:53 pm

So I have found out at least 3 miatas got broken into last night in SF including mine. They stole my hardtop (had security bolts with beatrush latches)

How did they take it with the security bolts and latches?!

I think those security bits are pretty easy to get.

Yep. $9.99 for a nice set at Harbor Freight.

Dammit! Thieves are getting smarter. So what is the next step? Tack weld the bolts onto the Spec Miata brackets?

Sorry to see that, that's really shitty. Just adds to my belief that San Francisco is a total shithole.

Either that, or burn SF to the ground...I have a lighter for someone to borrow...

I just did some Googling and didn't find anything at all re Miatae hardtops and tack welding bolt heads. In fact, very little on doing it at all for anything. The Electric Power Research Institute is OK with it as long as it's not critical components under stress. Probably not a lot of stress on the Miata hardtop.

A quick hit tack weld shouldn't do anything to the fiberglass heat wise. Maybe. Possibly. I shall experiment beforehand.

I just need to learn how to weld. This may occur tomorrow. LeMons Merkur build day.

Anyway, I shall "git er done" someway and report back.

We caught one of the guys today! A buddy of mine and I found a sketchy hardtop ad and went to check it out. The original picture was of my hardtop that was stolen 5 months ago but he sent us pictures of various hardtops every time we asked for pics. We set up a meeting last night to see if it was mine and it wasn't but we took note of every flaw and posted on the BAMO page about it. We got a response from a member within and hour saying his was stolen earlier yesterday in SF and his description was spot on. We told the seller we wanted to buy it and met him today but this time with the cops. The guy saw the cops coming and took off into COSTCO, leaving the car behind and was eventually arrested. Our new friend got his hardtop back along with his steering wheel which was in the trunk. Also, the car was stolen from Oakland so some lucky person will be getting their Miata back too haha. The cops said they might be checking out his house at some point. This happened in Manteca today so maybe you guys might want to ask the Police department here to keep an eye out if they do end up searching his place.

   Congratulations!

Excellent work! Nice on the bonus recovery of the stolen car too!

Good advice on those with stolen things calling the Manteca police to see if they turn up from the search.

I would like to buy you a beer or other beverage if the opportunity arises. You and your pals deserve it.

A relatively low-melt adhesive/wax/clay/etc can be used to plug the holes, then the whole assembly can be sprayed with plasti dip or paint so that the whole thing is seamless and uniform.

edit: bondo may work decently for this. paint stripper or a torch+razor+elbow grease will prob remove it.
