6 months til smog

Postby silvermazda » Thu Jul 10, 2014 4:19 pm

Last time I passed fine. A little high on the HC, but having a little less cat material on my NB1 was self explanatory.
There's a few months left to go and I will be busy with school (very busy 7-3pmx4 days). In short I dont want to deal with this.
Last time it was all fine, just relocated the sensors and it ran perfect, only took about 10 miles to get all the sensors to wake up.
The car has about 110K miles and recently made that pescadero drive. 30MPG Runs perfectly.
But last time the star tech, the shop was new as in the paint on the floor wasn't worn and the tool box was new, passed me although he was
slightly suspicious of my car (I was slightly shitting my pantaloons).

Now I'm not technically thinking it worth paying for a paid smog because 99% of it is stock looking. And really the ecu and the dyno I have no problem with.
It is the looking and nosy part.

Advice? And I've heard of people getting caught, so is there anyone out there willing to retell their story?

What 1 percent isnt stock looking? I wouldn't worry half the time smog techs dont know what the hell they are looking at anyways.

Was Googling about this and found some interesting "down in the weeds" reading...

The manual on how to do a smog check, including how to do a visual.

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/80_BARResou ... 9%20V3.pdf

A database of the CARB EO's. What I found interesting (skimming the turbo and supercharger EOs) that there were no pictures. So how can a smog tech look at something to see if it's OK without a picture? One more reason why the visual system doesn't make sense, as well as the arcane engine swap rules. If a car blows good numbers then it should pass - period.

Oh and smog numbers for you interested. Off the top of my head from 1.5yrs ago.
65/67 HC, 200/720 NOx, forgot what CO was but in the normal range. Tech arrived 20 minutes late from "shopping" and
then proceeded with my test, but let he car heat soak a bit once inside.

PS. anyone knows who has one of the new machines aka no roller test? just plug in and visual?

Bumping this because I've heard of the dynoless smog and got 3 months now. Just waiting on the slip to come in the mail.
I found my intake cam advanced a tooth 15 degrees, if I moved it back anyone know how that will affect emission numbers?

lmfao its just a smog dont worry about it. no big deal if you fail. i see cars fail all the time at work. they get fixed, resmoged, and done.

btw dynoless is the way to go nowadays you can get away with a lot depending on the car.

The plug in OBD2 smog checks are only for 2000 and up correct?

96-99 get the shaft, with both a plug in and dyno test required IIRC.

I dont got a 99, so that's why I want to know if the plug in is implemented yet. And I dont feel like doing the exhaust work, that's why twibs.

It isn't required yet, but some shops already have the new smog machine and are allowed to use it now. I got it at my work in august and have been using it since because i hate using the dyno and it is so much easier.

I believe its required as of Jan 1.

Interesting. Read the new smog regs for CA. If I understand correctly:

OBD 1 - visual, dyno, gas cap, timing check
96-99 - visual, dyno, OBD readiness, NO gas cap, NO timing check
2000 and up - visual, OBD readiness

Very jealous of you OBD 1 Joe!

I'd been around the blocks enough times to focus on '94s or '95s only.
We won't talk about the '94 having the worst fuel curve of any Miata from the factory.

That's what Megasquirts are for!!!
