What the hell am I going to do with this Miata

Postby brkinshiz » Fri May 05, 2017 11:44 pm

So today I bought a[nother] car.

Felt like an ok deal. Wasn't a screaming deal but I felt pretty good.

But what do I do now?

Image

I was only looking for Miatas to do some track beater stuff, but this thing is too original to do that. Original panels, interior is almost perfect. Has all the R-package lips and spoilers (did I mention it's an R-package?), still has the Bilsteins, still has the hollow spokes, still has the diff...

Image

Everything I do would make this no longer an R-package. The suspension would go, the wheels would go, the steering wheel would go, the interior would get cut up for a roll bar. Is that okay? I know it's ultimately my car. But I make fun of people all the ****ing time for taking an original car apart and ****ing it up. And here I am, having acquired a low mileage 94 R Package from the original owner, but the only thing I would do is tear it apart.

Image

Do I just do what I wanna do? Do I buy a second one to do what I want? First world problems I know, and it sounds funny coming from someone who tore apart a '95 M Edition for a backroad toy, but maybe things are different now. Are special editions actually special?

DISCUSS.

Flip it to BaT, double your money, and buy a beater Miata to make your own.

I think this is basically the right answer.

I think there is a certain cachet for some special editions, and NAs are certainly approaching the age where "all-original" things like this have value to some (whether or not that does anything for the monetary value of the car, that's an entirely different matter...).

How much of that value does it hold for you? Obviously it does have some, because you wouldn't have posted anything if it didn't.

How do you feel about being the caretaker of a car? Because to preserve the car's originality, clearly the only thing you can really do is keep it under a cover and take it out occasionally.

Since we all know you can't leave anything alone (just like the rest of us...), if it's actually meaningful to you that the car stays in its current condition, maybe it's best to sell it off. Drive the thing around a little bit and see if you can deal, but I suspect you won't be able to. I don't know what the best venue to move it along is, but since people seem to be willing to spend asinine amounts of money on pedestrian things on BaT, maybe that's the place? Make your profit, then track car things with the monies.

But maybe you *do* want to preserve this car yourself. I don't see a problem with doing that; somebody has to do it. I don't think you'd be up for the challenge, but you're the only one that can make that decision. It *is* a nice car...

I endorse what the previous typers have typed.

It does appear to be in very nice original shape. So it's either keep/preserve or flip.

Love these cars for what they don't have. No PS, no ABS etc.

IMHO the "R" package is the purest Miata other than maybe a base 90. Unfortunately really only the LBR or a 97R seems to be attracting any collector interest at this point. So it's probably just a great driver and conversation piece

Definitely don't cut it up. What is the mileage How much would you be looking for?
94R: no ABS, no PS, no AC, no OBDII, no TCS, no DSC, no ASC, no CC, no PDL, no PW. Just 225/50 Hoosier A6's

I mean, it certainly does drive very well for a dead stock car from '94. Changed the alignment to suit my liking and we're getting along better, but there's still that need to fiddle. Right now it's sitting at 98,XXX. I have no idea where to price it, considering the silliness I'm seeing on BAT/CL. On one hand it's a cool piece of Miata history that I should leave alone and just enjoy (or let someone else enjoy), on the other hand it's "just a '94".

There's plenty of upgrades you can do that would enhance the driving experience and even add value. I would just keep the stock parts to swap back on when you inevitably post it up on BAT. I'm sure it'll be a big topic of discussion at tomorrow's meet.

Mm, is true. I'll drag it along.

@punklove (George?) No one has really called dibs as of yet. Not really looking to trade into another Miata unless it's a 1.6 BRG/Sunburst/Silverstone, haha.

Well... still interested even if you dont wanna trade. That's a rare find you got there. At least abuse the hell out of it before you start modding (if you do). I'd daily drive that til the wheels fell off.

I've been having fun with it, for sure. It had cracked tires on it when I bought it (last week), immediately put new tires on it and hit the backroads.

The Windy City (San Mateo) meet is tonight, I'm bringing the car. Come check it out! I'll be posting it soon.

Bring on the low ballers. I don't think I'm going to get any real hits from this, so I'll probably get it detailed and try Bring a Trailer in a couple weeks.

Or just make a track car. It's the nicest Miata I've ever had, but it's just a white NA =P

*shurg*

There's a lot of Miatas to choose from. I've gotten a handful of late night texts/calls from people who change their mind after consulting their wife/parents/Force Ghost/covfefe/lawyer/bartender/etc.

Most of my sale periods have been like this.

Yeah, I can never convince my covfefe that a Fiero is a smart decision.
